I wrote a novelization of the old NES game, “Monster Party.” For some people, that’s all they need to know; the download link is at the bottom. Otherwise, read on.
If you had the chance to play the game, you probably remember it as one of the most fucked up games the console had to offer. Halfway through the first level (which has hitherto been a peaceful landscape), the scenery suddenly melts into a nightmarish realm. The music changes into a slow creepy tune, and just remembering it gives me the creeps.
This was written for a contest of sorts; the guys over at Noiseless Chatter were assembling an anthology of the “Lost Worlds of Power“; basically a tribute to the infamous Worlds of Power books in the late 80’s (basically, they were adaptations of assorted NES games, and ranged in quality from decent to abysmal). Anyone could submit; I ended up doing Monster Party.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t the only person who did Monster Party, and ultimately, theirs was picked for inclusion over mine. Philip J Reed, who runs the blog and read both stories, had high praise for mine, and encouraged me to release it independently, and so here it is.
So if you got some free time, give it a read and let me know how much you loved it (or how much you’d like a physical copy just so you can set it on fire) in the Comments!
PS: There are no pictures. I’m so very, very sorry.
PPS: I HIGHLY encourage you to check out the Lost Worlds of Power project. The full anthology has not been released yet, but should be coming soon. Physical copies to purchase are planned as well, though it will be released in digital format for free. I cannot wait to see the finished product!
PPPS: Mostly left this book alone after I submitted it. Looked through it again after initially posting this, and have come to the conclusion that it could use more editing. One day I might do that, and if so, I’ll post the Monster Party (Revised Edition) for the world to drown their sorrows in (In the meantime, any criticism is welcome!)
